Color Wheel Expanded
So what does the term Comlementary mean and what does a quilt made from these colors look like? Below we have put together a series of virtual quilts to show you just what Complementary, Triad and Analogous colors look like. We designed these quilts using Electric Quilt Software and Island Batik Fabrics.
The definitions of each is included for your reference. I call this section "Eye Candy City" - hope you enjoy it!
Want a bright children's quilt? Try Complementary color combinations.
- Definition: 2 colors, opposite each other on the color wheel.
- Quilt Created: High contrast and vibrant. Christmas green and red is an example.
- Hint: Use when you want a block or pattern to stand out. Popular with black and white mixed into the quilt.
In the mood for a soothing, gentle quilt? Try an Analogous colorway.
- Definition: 3 colors, adjacent to each other on the color wheel.
- Quilt Created: Relaxing, calm. Easy combinations to work with.
- Hint: Choose a focus color and use the others as accents. Use texture to add visual interest when using this combination.
Love one color and want it to stand out with accents? Use a Triad colorway.
- Definition: 3 colors, evenly spaced around the color wheel.
- Quilt Created: VIBRANT!! Blue, yellow and red quilts for children are an example.
- Hint: Balance your colors carefully. Also wonderful with white and black backgrounds.
