Thimbleberries Quilt Club Log Cabin Quilt Directions

Read all directions first. Pre wash fabrics and iron. All measurements below include a 1/4" seam allowance. Fat quarter pack of seven prints plus 1 yard 15" of white / off-white fabric of your choice is enough fabric for quilt top and binding. Backing, batting and threads sold separately.

Cutting your fabric:

Out of your white or off white fabric, cut the following:
Eight 7 7/8" squares, each recut into 2 half square triangles for a total of 16.
Fourteen strips, 44" long and 1 1/2" wide.
Recut these strips into the following lengths (the "logs" of your log cabin blocks):

24 squares, 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" 24 strips 1 1/2" x 2 1/2"
24 strips 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" 24 strips 1 1/2" x 4 1/2"
24 strips 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" 24 strips 1 1/2" x 6 1/2"

Seven 6 1/4" squares, each recut into 4 triangles each for a total of 28 triangles.
Two 6" squares, each recut into 2 half square triangles for a total of 4. These are for the outside corner blocks.

From your seven fat quarters of colored fabric, pull out your red toned fabric and cut 24, 1 1/2" squares for the center of your log cabin blocks. From the remaining fabrics, cut 1 1/2" strips. You can stack your fat quarters and cut several at once. Recut these into the following pieces:

24 strips 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" 24 strips 1 1/2" x 5 1/2"
24 strips 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" 24 strips 1 1/2" x 6 1/2"
24 strips 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" 24 strips 1 1/2" x 7 1/2"

Finally, cut eight 6 1/4" squares of assorted fabrics, each recut into 4 triangles for a total of 32 triangles.

Sew together 24 log cabin blocks, varying the colored strips to acheive a random effect. Your blocks should look like the block a the right, half off white, half colored strips.

Take the 24 blocks and 16 half square triangles and layout per the diagram below:

Sew together 8 colored triangles cut from the 6 1/4" squares and 7 from the off white as follows: Start and end with a colored triangle. Make a total of four strips.

This is the outside border of the quilt. Attach to quilt top, bottom and sides. Add the corner triangles cut from the off white 6" squares.

You will need a piece of backing and batting 49" x 49".

You can review our available battings here.

Quilt your quilt as desired. You will need 190" of binding. We used 2" wide binding strips which required 12" of fabric.
