Here Comes the Sun Wall Quilt Directions

Read all directions first. Pre wash fabrics and iron. All measurements below include a 1/4" seam allowance. Half yard pack has enough fabric for quilt top and binding. Backing, batting and threads sold separately.

Cutting your fabric:

OrangesUsing your butterfly fabric, fussy cut 6, 3" x 3" blocks with butterflies in the center.

PearsThe stripe fabric will form the "windows" framing the butterflies. You will need 12, 3" strips along the stripes, noting that it will take two identical strips to complete a square. Re cut these strips as follows:

Pears This fabric is used to surround the "windows". Watch the direction of the stripe when cutting - some will be cut straight and others at the diagonal.
  • Cut 2, 8" squares for the center blocks.
  • Cut 3, 8 3/8" squares and re-cut into two half square triangles each, for a total of 6 triangles for the side triangle pieces.

  • Cut 2, 6 3/8" squares and precut into two half square triangles each, for a total of 4 triangles for the corner pieces.

Pears Used as posts in the outside borders, you will need 4, 2 1/2" squares and 4, 4" squares. Use this fabric as your binding as well. Cut 9, 2"x 18" strips.

Pears This is used as the inner border. You will need 4, 2 1/2" strips. Re cut into 2 strips 2 1/2" x 32" and 2 strips 2 1/2" x 21 1/4".

Pears This is used as the outer border. You will need 4, 4" strips. Re cut into 2 strips 4" x36" and 2 strips 4" x 25 1/4".

Assembling the quilt top:

Frame your fussy - cut butterflies with the colorful strip trapezoids using the Y-seam technique.

Lay your quilt top out and sew in diagonal rows. Assemble rows.

Square up your top to measure 32" x 21 1/4"

Inner border:

Attach the two strips measuring 32" to the long sides of the quilt top. Attach mottled blue fabric posts (2 1/2" square) to the top and bottom of the remaining 2 strips of 21 1/4" fabric. Attach to the top and bottom of the quilt top

Outer border:

Attach the two strips measuring 36" to the long sides of the quilt top. Attach mottled blue fabric posts (4" square) to the top and bottom of the remaining 2 strips of 25 1/4" fabric. Attach to the top and bottom of the quilt top.

Your top, before binding, will measure 31 3/4" x 42 1/4".

Adding Butterflies and Flowers:

Fussy cut several butterflies and flowers from the remaining fabric. Arrange them on your quilt top, and baste in place. You can either applique them by hand, use spray basting to secure them and then attach using invisible thread, or any other method of attaching them to the top of your quilt. We attached butterflies in the corners, as well. Have fun with the placement!!

You will need a piece of backing and batting 38" x 48".
You can review our available battings here.
Quilt your quilt as desired.
You will need 162" of binding. We used 2" wide binding strips which required 8" of fabric or use 9, 2" x 18" strips of the mottled blue fabric noted above.
